Danza No. 1 is the first of four string works that highlight music from the Caribbean. The Danza originated in Puerto Rico during the latter half of the 19th century as a form of open resistance to Spanish rule. Similar to the Cuban Danzón, partners dance in a closed position, albeit more intimately than existing ballroom forms to convey a disdain for Spanish gender norms and the idea of female chastity. I.e.: The ownership of a woman by a man.
This work features some of the standard rhythmic elements of music from Latin America with modified harmony and should be interpreted through a lens of freedom and liberation. Performers should feel encouraged to take liberties with tone, articulation (where artistically appropriate) and tempi to convey an atmosphere of intimacy and communication.
